About
12 years ago, an 8-year-old girl by the name of Erin Fox picked up
her mother's old and worn Washburn acoustic guitar and cried out,
"TEACH ME" to her mother.
A couple years later, Erin
had the basics and then some down, which led her to pursue guitar
lessons with a more professional guitar teacher.
That's when
younger sister, Katie, stepped in.
The two had spent many
nights at dinner annoying their parents by having drumming
competitions on the table.
Erin and her father noticed that Katie
had a very naturally advanced sense of rhythm for her age (about 10
at the time).
By the time Katie was 11, her father had bought
her a drum pad and a set of sticks just to toy with to see if she'd
like it.
Needless to say, she rarely ever went anywhere without
it.
So after inheriting an antique wooden set of leedee ludwigs
from an uncle, she was ready to drum.
That year (2002), Mr.
Fox started seeking out a drum teacher.
He had gotten a reference
for a man by the name of Jim Cavanaugh (former RCA recording artist)
from Erin's guitar teacher at the time.
Mr. Fox begged him to
teach Katie.
Jim stated that he was pretty much done with teaching
at that point, but dad just wouldn't take no for an answer.
So the
whole family went out to a local bar to see Jim's band play.
Jim
invited Katie up to show him what she could do.
Needless to say,
she impressed him considering her age and lack of education with the
drums.
So he did decide to give her lessons.
Not long into
giving her lessons at their house, Jim somehow discovered that Erin
was writing and playing her own songs.
Jim had always wanted to be
a producer for a band, so he told Erin to come to his house and start
recording.
They didn't have much to work with in the
beginning, but that's how SugrHi began.
By 2006, they were on
their second bassist and had released their debut album.
Later
that year, there was some creative conflict among the band members,
and the sisters were left searching for a bassist who was more like
themselves, in the sense that they were very serious about their
music and were ready to take things to higher levels.
Erin,
Katie, and Jim auditioned a couple of different girls.
The very
last to audition was Julia Tasca.
They had heard about her from a
friend who did some photography in the past for them.
They had
Julia play one of their less challenging songs, "Californ-I-A"
after giving her only a few minutes to learn the chord progression
and arrangement.
Needless to say, Julia pretty much nailed it on
her first try.
They decided right there on the spot that this was
the girl that they were looking for.
Julia had played guitar,
drums, AND the bass throughout her childhood...so that was definitely
a bonus for the group.
Erin actually booked a major show
giving the band only three weeks to come up with a killer set and
teach Julia all of their material. And that show was a success.
Now
after two years together, the girls have been working harder than
ever and are currently working on their second album.
Julia is
sixteen years of age
Katie is eighteen years of age
And Erin is
nearing twenty now.
Erin is a graduate of Methacton High
School
Katie has less than a year left
And Julia has about a
year and a half until she will be finished.
Once they are all
out of high school, the girls hope to be touring and still taking
things to the next level.
All of them are indeed special, and
the music they make together proves it.
And there is still
much more to come as time goes on.
